Stewie-Entrepreneur

If you are a Family Guy lover (i am) then you would appreciate this scene. If you are a small business owner who deals with invoices and clients, then you will appreciate this video. One of the hardest things when working with clients is when they do not own up to pay you for your services.

Back when i owned my own design firm this was a problem that seemed to happen every month like clockwork. Invoices and clients ducking you, loving the work but not wanting to pay you for it. If you are a young entrepreneur then you are bound to deal with this because regardless of who your client is or may be there will come a time when they feel that they can pull one over on you.

How to Prevent This From Happening

1. Always have your clients sign and contact

I don’t really think i need to explain this one… They will be held liable to hold up with their end of paying you. This eliminates the confusion and keeps it simplistic.

2. Always get your contracts recorded and certified by a notary

This will make it easier for you to enforce the contract in a court of law. When doing business, try to avoid short cuts because eventually they will come back to bite you. All contracts should be certified and notarized.

What is a notary?

someone legally empowered to witness signatures and certify a document’s validity and to take depositions

3. Always collect a non-refundable deposit before every job

This locks in your job and position and solidifies your contract. Most clients will not joke around once their money is on the table. This also, in most cases, prevent your clients from deciding at the last minute that they will go with someone else for less.

4. No when to say NO!

When working with clients (depending on the job), most clients will try to get more than what their money is paying for. If you are a freelancer then you can probably relate to this. As a designer during school most clients (big and small) always tried to keep the job going by making unreasonable requests (paying for an HTML design job but requesting FLASH Animation and Programming). This is when you need to learn to say no, or ask if they would like to pay the additional fee.

5. ALWAYS DO QUALITY WORK

This and number 6 are very important. During my freelancing days i saved a ton of money because most of my clients were referred to me from repeat clients who loved my work and professionalism. These are your knights in shining armor. Even if you and the client leave on the wrong foot they will use the work that they paid for and as a result this too will generate more clientèle. Maybe even their competitors. You do not owe anyone just the client with the open contract, this too is an ethics thing i guess.

6. ABCP - ALWAYS BE CLOSING (i love this acronym) PROFESSIONALLY

The title is self-explanatory. Follow it, even if you are just getting started. Clients appreciate and will respect you more. A client and business relationship is all about trust. If you don’t trust them take a little more off the top (deposit) than usual. If they aren’t willing to give a deposit then they aren’t serious about the work. Let them go and move on, DO NOT COMPROMISE! They will take advantage of you and cause more headaches then necessary.

Think of it this way… When i pay for a service, I don’t pay for the service itself, I pay for the results…

So after some long thinking and research a friend of mine came across a great deal… Jeep Certified used vehicle (Means nothing except it has a warranty) do not be fooled by dealership rhetoric in their attempts to confuse you by using salesman language.

Well, in this case if you get a lazy salesman like the one they had at Suburban Chrysler Jeep Dealership in Novi, Michigan then you wouldn’t have to worry much. The test drive was believed to be something honest and respectable, the Lazy salesman told them to drive it around the block, 4 rights should bring them back to the dealership, no highway stuff…

The Basics:
They were sold an 07′ Jeep Liberty classified Certified Used Jeep… Not only did this dealership try to run them with unethical practices when it came time to do their loan and match the original rate they were receiving. This guy told them that they can drive the Jeep off the lot if they used the dealership financing (not to mention that the title wasn’t with them). He said all they would have to do is fill out a ‘Title Lost’ form and put a $50 deposit down (refundable)… just in case the title doesn’t make its way to the dealership. Wtf? really? How ethical is that? Especially coming from a major (Suburban Chrylser Jeep) dealership.

Although, I will admit they did get a good deal on the Jeep Liberty, but that’s what my friend does, he sniffs out great deals on everything from homes to pets to vacations for clients… it’s ridiculous… back on topic…

So they drive the car home and to their knowledge everything is going great, until they discover the windshield was not properly sealed… How dangerous is this? wth? After looking at the papers, everything was checked including the ‘Windshield Inspection‘ well what do you know… and once they called the dealership back (that evening) the Lazy Salesman had the audacity to dispute the allegation by claiming that the car was inspected due to the certified standards and so on, claiming that the car has been driven and so on, well my friend asked the Lazy Salesman whether or not he drove the car on the highway…. ding ding ding… and guess what the answer was, nope! What a schmuck… with that said he agreed that the dealership would fix it, AS IF HE HAD A CHOICE… idiot…

So my friend calls in to see if he can get a spare tire jeep cover or a jeep cargo cover, this Lazy Salesman refused to give up the $45-$60 for the inconvenience, talk about good salesmanship… this place lacks it like crazy… Suburban Chrysler Jeep in Novi, Michigan don’t ask for Mike this crab doesn’t get any recommendations…

Let’s face it building traffic is a daunting task and although there are so many ways to go about building traffic to your site, and even ugly sites need love too (eFufChairs Dot Com). I digressed, I have to admit, like some bloggers, StumbleUpon and Digg have been my biggest traffic generators while overnight forcing my site to go offline in the past. The problem has been corrected. It’s sickening honestly, I have no clue what happens when i turn away from my computer all i know is that in the morning, bright and early, i have to check my hosting stats.

I guess you can call this part duex of an article that i posted a few weeks ago (3 Ways to Increase your Blog Traffic). I should probably expand on this. First and foremost, always be prepared for a traffic spike. You will save money with hosting and time not having to worry about whether or not your host provider is up on their job. In most cases your site will be offline for a half day to three days if you wait on your hosting provider. So be prepared.

Now there are so many ways to drive traffic to your blog or website without much effort. As mentioned Stumble, Digg, Article submissions are all effective methods of driving traffic to your site. Here is another list of possible traffic generators:

1. Guest blog for other blog sites.
This is an effective way to broaden your readership. In fact, i recommend this method of driving traffic to your site because it is in fact safe and a good way to get your name and website out there. Not to mention the potential to build your site authority and raise your Google and Alexa page rank.

However, be prepared for the audience to come. What is worse than winning a raffle and not being their to claim your prize? Winning the lottery and not answering the door. Well, the same goes here.

Imagine doing a guest post for a site that gets ton of publicity daily and not only that, now your blog site is reaping the benefits and getting a taste of the traffic but you don’t have one authority or anchor article on your site to wheel your visitors in, just random ramblings of dinner, girls, boys, toenails… i think you get the idea.

Be prepared, add authority to your site before venturing out to guest post on other blogs. Make their readers want to come back and check up on you. Talk about some random topics that fit your blog site and others, keep a wide range of artillery for the cavalry. You’ll never see them coming so always be prepared.

When most people read or hear about making money online they tend to think of the most traditional method of selling products online through market places such as ebay (www.ebay.com), Ubid (www.uBid.com), Sell (www.Sell.com), Amazon (www.Amazon.com), Half (www.Half.com), to name a few. Very few people go the route of creating, and managing their very own e-commerce website. With the right product and the right niche this can be a sure way to make millions from a few bucks.

For beginners you want to create a plan, not a traditional business plan but a plan to help keep you guided in your venture. A place to save your notes, goals and ideas. To make this article easy on the eyes I’ll map out each step:

1. Purchase or grab a notepad
Here is where you will keep your ideas, goals, plans, and notes as you continue your ventures. The importance of keeping a notepad is to outline your process and save your thoughts. Basically, it’s just like a journal with less emotion. You want to save your notes, and ideas because even if you don’t get a chance to use them this time around you keep them close and use them when you go to do your next venture. Continue Reading »
